Matt
It was a few days after the encounter with Allison in the practice room that Matt noticed the girl who sat across the aisle from him in AP European History. He suddenly felt like she might have been at that initiation too, though he wasn’t certain. He must have stared at her a bit too long though because she turned to look at him and suddenly turned bright red. Her eyes flared and she bit her lip, then turned away.
That certainly felt like a confirmation to Matt. She was pretty. Her long, red hair was a bit frizzy in her ponytail but shorter pieces framed her face in a very flattering way. Now that he was thinking about it, he remembered seeing her with this guy from his dorm, Elijah. He always assumed that they were dating. Now, Matt was suddenly curious about how that would work - her accepting membership in the Primrose Society while he wasn’t invited. Either that, or he had declined and left before they were able to see each other.
Well, he was supposed to get to know the other members anyway, he might as well talk to Nicole and ask her about it.
“Hey,” he called to her as they packed up their books at the end of class.
“Hey,” she replied, her face flushing again. She dragged the zipper of her bookbag closed and looked up at him, waiting for Matt to say more.
Suddenly, he wasn’t sure exactly how to begin.
“You and Elijah are together, right?” he blurted out. She rolled her eyes and sighed.
“No, we’re not.” She started walking and he followed her out of the room, walking alongside her.
“Oh, I thought you were. Sorry.”
“We dated for a pretty long time, but not anymore,” she explained.
“Ah, I see. Was that… I’m sorry, you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to but was that because of Primrose… or…?” he left it hanging on that, and Nicole turned to him sharply, a horrified expression on her face.
“No! God, no! He broke up with me before that.”
“I’m sorry. I am really making an ass of myself.” Matt rubbed the back of his neck as they stopped in front of what he assumed to be Nicole’s next class. She sighed.
“It’s ok. I do that pretty regularly myself. The whole… Primrose thing included,” she added in a quieter voice.
“Umm… well, I just wanted to say that we should hang out,” he finally came out with it. Of course, he couldn’t force himself to be as blatant and upfront about it all as Allison had been with him. But he hoped she’d understand.
She nodded, blushing profusely once again, and turned to head into the classroom.
Matt caught up with her again at dinner, sitting down next to her at the table where she had been alone. She flashed him a shy smile while she chased her peas around the plate with a fork.
“Have you gotten any… ummm signatures on your card yet?” He immediately kicked himself for saying that. Why the hell was he so awkward suddenly? Or had he always been like this and just noticed it now?
“No.” She shook her head. The fact that she was blushing constantly when talking to him made Matt feel like maybe she was just as awkward as he was.
“Maybe I could help you with that.”
She inhaled sharply through her nose and nodded.
That was good. They’d made progress. Instead of worrying about how to approach the subject with her, he switched to worrying about where they were going to hook up. Was it too cold to go out to the benches down by the soccer field? It was pretty secluded and he’d made out with a girl out there before. But this wouldn’t be just making out, would it? Obviously, they couldn’t just sign off for each other without something that would be considered sex.
“You wanna take a walk after dinner?” Nicole suggested, her voice shaky and her eyes glued to her plate.
“Yeah, that would be good,” he agreed.
He was definitely much more in his comfort zone making out with Nicole out by the empty visitor parking lot than he had been fucking Allison. Not that she was his first. He’d been with a couple of girls before - but that was at home, over the summer. At school, he’d never done much more than fool around with girls and he was under the impression that this was all anyone did around here. They were all so straight-laced! But obviously, he was wrong.
He was really enjoying the feel of Nicole’s mouth, the way her lips moved against his softly, and her tongue was so tentative in connecting with his. She reached a hand up to his hair, running her fingers through it, giving him the shivers. And he replied by pulling her in closer against him.
Neither of them made the next move. His lips were starting to get sore from all the kissing while his erection raged inside his pants. It begged for friction, for some sort of stimulation. To be touched, or sucked. In desperation, Matt pulled Nicole up into his lap, having her face him. His hands went to her ass and he pressed her body into his, against his tented jeans. She gasped and pulled her mouth away.
Her eyes shone brightly in the dark as she stared back at him, her hands on his shoulder. Her body was perfectly still.
“I have to tell you something,” she spoke in a hushed whisper. Matt listened. “I’m a virgin.”
He tried to process her words but somehow they weren’t computing.
“Why?!” he blurted out, uncomprehending. “I mean, why did you agree to do this?! Why didn’t you just leave when they offered it?”
Her fingers fidgeted on his shoulders while she launched into her explanation about her ex and the reason he broke up with her and wanting to prove him wrong. Matt had never been a violent guy, but he was getting the urge to smack that guy upside his head.
He hadn’t let go of her still, his arms stayed wrapped around Nicole as she talked. He certainly wouldn’t make the same mistake and pressure her into anything that she wasn’t ready for.
“Listen, we don’t have to. I get it if you don’t want to. I’m sorry you are stuck in this situation.”
“Maybe…” she chewed her lower lip, “we could work up to it?”
“For sure, we can do that,” he agreed.
She leaned back in to kiss him again and he thought he sensed her relax against him this time. Her body seemed looser, her shoulders less tense. Nicole melted into him and there was a sense of satisfaction that he could do this for her. That he could ease her mind about this major step.
